General Info About A572

A572 plate is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel that includes five grades—42, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 80—according to their minimum specified yield strength. For applications requiring notch toughness, Kloeckner Metals also supplies it charpy tested.

More Details About A572

  • Advantages/Disadvantages

A572 steel plate has good structural quality with an optimal combination of high strength, high notch toughness, good weldability, and high value. Due to its alloying elements, it can be a little more difficult to form and pre-testing of both welding and post-welding heat treatments is recommended.

  • Industries

A572 grades 50, 65, and 80 are seen widely in the solar industry and the wind industry. As a structural steel plate, ASTM A572 grades are common in structural applications across a broad range of market segments.

  • Applications

A572 is often used in construction equipment, bridges, buildings, machinery, freight cars, truck parts, and power transmission poles. Because of its versatility, it is considered a “workhorse” grade and shows up in a huge range of products. A572 grades 50, 65, and 80 steel plate are frequently used in the wind industry where they are often used as base plates for wind turbines and can be custom roll formed to size and welded into wind towers.

  • Machining

A572 is an HSLA steel plate with fair machinability. It can be drilled, countersinked, counterbored, tapped, and milled with conventional equipment and carbide tools.

  • Welding

A572 steel plate is considered to have excellent weldability and can be weld by all conventional methods.

  • Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is not required for A572 steel plate. However, it is possible to require a higher level of strength by specifying quenched and tempered steel plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between plate mill rolled and plate strip mill A572?

The terms “plate mill rolled” and “plate strip mill” refer to two different methods of manufacturing steel plates, including A572 steel. Here’s an explanation of the difference between the two:

    1. Plate Mill Rolled (PMR): Plate mill rolling is a process where the steel plates are manufactured directly from slabs of steel through a series of rolling operations. The slabs are heated and then passed through a series of rolling stands, which progressively reduce the thickness and shape the plates to the desired dimensions. This method is typically used for producing thick and heavy plates.
    2. Plate Strip Mill (PSM): Plate strip mill, also known as continuous mill rolling, is a process where steel plates are manufactured from coiled steel strip. The steel strip is unwound and passed through a series of rolling stands, which gradually reduce the thickness and increase the length of the strip until it reaches the desired plate thickness. The plates are then sheared to the required dimensions. This method is commonly used for producing thinner and lighter plates.

In the context of A572 steel, both plate mill rolled and plate strip mill refer to the manufacturing process used to produce A572 steel plates. The choice of method depends on factors such as plate thickness, size, and desired properties. Generally, plate mill rolled A572 steel plates are suitable for thicker sections and heavier applications, while plate strip mill A572 steel plates are used for thinner sections and lighter applications. Both are available to customers for purchase on Kloeckner Direct.
