  • How large is the construction industry


    The construction industry is a significant sector of the United States economy, providing employment and infrastructure for communities across the country. According to the US Census Bureau, the total value of construction put in place in the United States in 2020 was approximately $1.4 trillion.

    In terms of employment, the industry is one of the largest employers in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the industry employed approximately 7.5 million people in March 2021. This accounted for around 4.3% of the total US workforce.

    The construction industry can be broken down into several subsectors, including residential construction, nonresidential construction, and heavy and civil engineering construction. In 2020, the value of residential construction put in place was approximately $600 billion, while nonresidential construction was valued at around $400 billion. The remaining construction spending was on heavy and civil engineering projects such as highways, bridges, and other infrastructure.

    The size of the industry in the United States can also vary by state and region. For example, states with rapidly growing populations like Texas and Florida tend to have higher levels of construction activity than other parts of the country.
