The cold finishing process results in many advantages. It provides high tensile strength, yield strength, straightness, uniform thickness, smooth and polished finishing character, an unoxidized bright coloring, improved hardness, and tight size tolerances that are true to shape.
Cold finishing is a highly efficient process that occurs close to or at room temperature. The steel requires a pass through high pressure rollers and oil to achieve uniform thickness and a clean finish. One slight disadvantage of the cold finishing process is a decrease in ductility. However, cold finished products will resist breaking under tension.
Cold worked bar can be used for a wide range of applications, including home appliances, architectural fixtures and detailing, tools and mold components, motor mounts, brackets, metal furniture and other products that require a smooth, clean finish and even thickness throughout.
Kloeckner Metals routinely stocks A108 cold finished squares, A108 cold finished rounds, A108 cold finished hexagons, and A108 cold finished flats. Kloeckner Metals also stocks C1018 cold finished squares, C1018 cold finished rounds, C1018 cold finished hexagons, and C1018 cold finished flats.
A108 is a mild, low carbon steel that is best for machining, forming, and welding components that do not require high strengths, including fixtures and mounting plates. ASTM A108 has a yield strength of 54,000 psi and can be heat treated. Kloeckner Metals supplies A108 cold finished squares, A108 cold finished rounds, A108 cold finished hexagons, and A108 cold finished flats.
C1018 steel is a general purpose, low carbon steel. It shows good weldability, quality surface hardening, improved machinability, and yield strengths up to 60,000 psi.
C1018 is often used in machine parts, threaded gears, shafts, spacers, and other components that do not require high strength but benefit from good wear resistance and a clean surface finish. Kloeckner Metals supplies C1018 cold finished squares, C1018 cold finished rounds, C1018 cold finished hexagons, and C1018 cold finished flats.

ANSWER:
Cold finished bar products can be formed into different shapes to meet various project needs. Squares, rounds, hexagons, and flats are considered different bar formats and each one has a unique cross section.
While these steel bar formats are also achieved through the hot rolled process, bar products that are cold finished will provide much tighter tolerances, with a much more aesthetically pleasing surface quality, and even thicknesses throughout. As a result, cold finished bar products are formed truer to shape.
ANSWER:
Cold finished steel describes the specific fabrication process. Steel bar is a specific format (like steel plate, steel sheet, or steel coil) and can be further shaped, either to have a flat face, round character, or multiple sides. Cold finished processing differs from hot rolled steel in that the steel is not heated to extreme temperatures before being rolled and shaped. Instead, cold finished steel remains at room temperature and passes through rollers at high pressures.
ANSWER:
A cold finished round bar is a steel bar product with a round character that has undergone the cold finishing process.
ANSWER:
A cold finished flat bar is a steel bar product that has a flat face that has been cold worked.
ANSWER:
Tolerances for this cold worked steel bar product depend on a few factors:
Typical cold finished steel bar tolerances tend to be strict, which is one of the main benefits of cold worked steel.
