Learn More About Each Galvannealed Steel Grade

General Info About Galvannealed Steel

Galvannealed steel is made by annealing steel that has already been through the galvanization process. This annealing process is done by putting the freshly galvanized steel in an annealing furnace for a few seconds. This process causes the zinc and iron to diffuse into one another creating a zinc-iron alloy layer on its surface.

One of the major perks of galvannealed steel is its paint adhesion. It is used for steel fabricated products that need a painted application including doors and door frames. It is also used in the automobile and construction industries due to its low maintenance properties. Galvannealed steel is high-value steel that is used for a variety of functions in multiple industries.

More Details About Each Galvannealed Steel Product

  • A653

A653 is easy to machine, form, and weld. This carbon flat roll grade is often fabricated into parts where high strength is not a requirement. Kloeckner Metals supplies A653 hot dipped galvanized sheets.

  • CS-A

CS Type A is a commercial galvanized cold roll steel. It has a chemical composition including carbon, phosphorous, manganese, sulphur, and iron.

  • CS-B

CS Type B is a commercial steel with a carbon, phosphorous, manganese, sulphur, and iron chemical makeup.

  • DS

Drawing Steel showcases advanced ability to be drawn. DS is characterized by less than .05% carbon. This results in a very soft metal that can be easily bent and shaped in the manufacturing process. It is suitable for applications requiring superior drawing capabilities.

  • DDS

Deep Drawing Steel is best for severe drawing applications.

  • EDDS

Extra Deep Drawing Steel offers the highest formability and the lowest strength reserved for deep drawing applications.

  • 33-55

Kloeckner Metals supplies 33-55 in galvanized and galvannealed formats.

More Details About Galvannealed Steel

  • Advantages and Disadvantages

    Advantages:

    • Galvannealed steel is great for paint adhesion.
    • This steel is corrosive resistant for many years after its creation making it have a very long life span.
    • This type of steel does not need a lot of maintenance and is great for maintenance-free use applications.

    Disadvantages:

    • Galvannealed steel may corrode faster when it has not been painted.
  • Industries

Galvannealed steel is frequently used in the automobile and construction industries. This is due to its resistance to corrosion and its ability to be painted. It is a long-lasting and high-value steel for applications that requires little maintenance.

  • Applications

This steel is the preferred material for the construction of permanent debris and linen chute systems. It is often used in situations where the paint on the metal is necessary such as doors and door handles. This steel is also very low-maintenance so it is used in guardrails, bridges, fencing, and signs due to its convenience.

  • Machining

Galvannealed steel is machinable in a similar way to galvanized. It may take different machinery and more effort to do so, but it is possible. A round, electric saw is typically used to cut into this type of steel.

  • Welding

This steel is also welded using a similar process as galvanized steel. An arc welder is what is typically suggested to use when welding this steel. This type of steel needs to be welded outside due to the fumes created when heating the steel.

  • Heat Treatment

Galvannealed steel itself is already heat-treated. The process of annealing steel is a form of heat treatment that this steel goes through in order to become galvannealed. The galvanized steel goes through a 500-565℃ furnace to become annealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do you compare galvannealed vs. galvanized steal?

    ANSWER:

Galvanized steel is steel that has only gone through the galvanizing process. This steel is dipped in a hot bath of pure zinc. Galvannealed steel is galvanized steel that is put through the additional process of annealing. This steel is put in an annealing furnace so that the zinc and iron bond together to form an alloy layer.

  • What should I look for in a galvannealed steel sheet supplier?

    ANSWER:

An indicator of a good galvannealed steel sheet supplier is a good galvanized steel sheet supplier. The quality of the galvanized steel is the foundation of the quality of the gavannealed steel. Kloeckner Metals provides a wide variety of galvanized and gavannealed steel products.
