ASTM A1011 steel is a standard specification for steel that defines three grades: high strength low alloy steel, low carbon steel, and stainless steel. The products on this page are low carbon steels. This means the steels’ carbon content is no more than 2.1%. This property makes the steel softer and easier to form.
Low carbon steel is also easily weldable and machinable making it formable into a variety of shapes and sizes. Industries that use A1011 steel include automotive, pipe and tube, and agricultural. Some examples of applications of A1011 are truck frames, wheels, pipe and tube, water heaters, strappings, stamping, and compressor shells. One of the most common uses of this steel is seamless and welded pipes for applications such as water supply, pressure piping, and air conditioning.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
ASTM A1011 low carbon steel is found in a variety of industries including automotive, pipe and tube, and agriculture. It is most commonly found in pipe and tube industries where it is used for a variety of applications for seamless and welded pipes.
Applications for A1011 are many! Some of these applications include truck frames, wheels, pipes and tubing, water heaters, strappings, stampings, compressor shells, doors, and shelving. The most common application used for A1011 is seamless and welded pipes used for water supply, air conditioning, pressure piping, and electrical conduit.
A1011 is machinable. It is considered a malleable steel product that can be easily bent, formed, and cut into nearly any shape or configuration necessary due to its low carbon content. It is a huge advantage to using this type of steel.
ASTM A1011 is weldable due to its low carbon content. This factor makes this steel soft and malleable which are the ideal properties for welding.
This steel can be heat treated and often is in most cases. For this steel to be hot rolled pickled and oiled it must be heat treated. It can also be heat treated to strengthen the steel and improve other mechanical properties.

Hot rolled pickled and oiled A1011 steel is A1011 that has been through the hot rolling, pickling, and oiling process. The steel first goes through the hot rolling process by being heated to an extremely high temperature, then it is rolled out while still hot. After the hot rolling process, the steel is dropped in acid to remove surface imperfections. Once the steel has gone through the acid and dried off, it is then oiled.
Hot rolled dry A1011 steel is A1011 steel that has been hot rolled that does not go through the pickling and oiling process. Therefore, the steel is drier than HRPO.
