Kloeckner Metals stocks a variety of A871-65 steel products including A871-65 hot rolled dry and A871-65 hot rolled pickled and oiled steel.
A871 weathering steel is high-strength, low-alloy HSLA steel that has atmospheric corrosion resistance much better than that of carbon steels. This means the steel is typically used for applications that are outside and must withstand the elements. A871 comes in two different grades including grades 60 and 65. This steel can be used as an alternative to galvanized steels due to its weather resistance.
A871-65 hot rolled dry steel has been hot rolled but has not been through the pickling and oiling process afterwards. This version of steel has no finish which means it typically has a rougher surface finish.
A871-65 hot rolled pickled and oiled steel has been through the pickling and oiling process. This process involves the steel being dipped into a pool of acid to remove surface impurities. After the acid bath, the steel is then finished with oil to give it a smooth and hydrated finish.

ADVANTAGES:
The main use of this type of steel is for outside applications such as transmission poles, outdoor lighting poles, and signposts. This is due to the steel’s atmospheric corrosion resistance.
This grade can be machined in the annealed condition but will have better results when the condition is H1150M.
This grade is weldable and can be welded by common fusion and resistance methods but should not be joined by oxyacetulene welding.
It is heat treatable. For example, this steel can be galvannealed.

A871 Grade 60 has an ultimate tensile strength of 75,000 PSI and a yield strength of 60,000 PSI.
