409 stainless steel plate is a general purpose stainless steel product and Kloeckner Metals proudly supplies it nationwide throughout our network of 40+ branches.
409 stainless steel plate is a general purpose ferritic stainless steel that is mainly used for automotive exhaust systems. It is a chromium titanium stabilized stainless steel that protects against oxidation at elevated temperatures and atmospheric conditions.
This stainless steel grade demonstrates mechanical properties that offer key advantages in the automotive and agriculture industries. This includes superior protection against exhaust gas as well as atmospheric corrosion at elevated temperatures. These mechanical properties outweigh this stainless steel’s appearance, however. It is not recommended for decorative applications.
The automotive and agriculture industries are the most common industries for this stainless steel grade.
Applications that require oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures and medium strength are best for this stainless steel grade. It is primarily purposed in automotive exhaust systems for things like tailpipes, mufflers, and converters. It is also found in non-automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, silencers, agricultural spreaders, and furnace components.
It has excellent machinability.
It is weldable.
It is not heat treatable.
