Durable Roofing for Hawaii: Style and Longevity Against Corrosion

09.14.2015

If you love your island life and want to spend your time on the beach instead of worrying about your roof, choose roofing materials in Hawaii that last. Unless you choose roofing materials in Hawaii that last, our humid climate and salty air deteriorate roofs and other metal surfaces to the extent that frequent maintenance is a must.

Newer Materials And Methods Means Less Maintenance And A Longer Life

There are two basic types of metal roofs to choose from; the exposed fastener roofs and the newer, streamlined standing seam roofs. While exposed fastener roofs are less expensive, there are some advantages to standing seam roofs that will save you in the long run. Here are some details about each type:

Exposed Fastener Roofs

Economical and easy to install, exposed fastener roofs were the original and are the most widely used roofing materials in Hawaii. Common among commercial and agricultural buildings, panels used for this type of construction are produced in standard lengths that overlap adjacent panels and commonly sold through hardware stores, or Kloeckner can cut the panels to length for a custom fit during our weekly production runs.

One drawback, non-stainless steel fasteners can fail over time, especially in Hawaii’s hot climate, as the panels are fixed in place, they do not contract and expand with the weather. This leaves hundreds or thousands of holes where water has the potential to penetrate. This can result in corrosion that limits the life expectancy of the products to between 20 and 25 years. Even with good maintenance, screws may need to be retightened or replaced with slightly larger diameter fasteners in order to keep the roof stable.

Standing Seam Roofs

A more costly option is concealed clip, standing seam roofing made of hot-dip galvalume coated steel. Available in continuous length panels, it is possible to get a long-lasting metal roof made for the long run. With an average life expectancy of over 25 years, a standing seam roof has no visible fasteners to pierce the surface of the panels. Coated with the ULTRA-Cool® heat reflective Kynar 500® paint system, properly designed it can withstands hurricanes, high winds, and fire, while still being very low maintenance. Its Energy Star ratings makes it a responsible choice for homeowners, and it can offers builders LEEDs points both for its energy efficiency and its sustainability, as well. These roofing materials can be special ordered with a high percentage of recycled content, and are 100% recyclable at the end of their lifespan.

Roofing Materials That Last

Roofing materials can give a home a high-end look, while giving homeowners the satisfaction of knowing that they will not be confronted with frequent maintenance costs or early replacement. Standing seam roofs from Kloeckner Metals always stay a step ahead of Hawaii’s corrosive climate.
