Kloeckner Metals Featured Equipment: Voortman V550-6
Kloeckner Metals carries the Voortman V550-6. It’s engineered as a high-pressure punching and shearing machine for flat and angle figures. It can be supplied with several shear options to accommodate practically every application. Check out our equipment profile video:
Kloeckner Metals is one of the largest metal distributors in the world. We’re very large in the United States. We have over 50 locations to service everything from long products, flat roll products, aluminum, and stainless.
Our biggest customer base is structural fabrication. We also do forklift industry, rail transportation, agricultural, snow removal. One of the goals of Kloeckner Metal is to get into more value added and more processing. There’s a lot of people now that sell materials so we have to change our focus a little bit.
The machine is a Voortman. It is a V550-6. It is a structural steel processing machine. It will process flats, angles, and some channel. It will punch, drill, sheer, and scribe on that material. It will process an 8x8x5/8ths angle. A 1″x20″ flat and an 8″ channel. The drill and punch tolerances are for standard punch and drill. Positional tolerances should be within, less than 30,000ths. We should be able to cut the length, 60,000ths. Positional tolerance on drilled holes and things like that between 60 and 30,000ths. It obviously increases our processing kit’s abilities and capabilities that our other customers may not have but it’ll punch three times what a Warden conventional equipment.
A lot of our customers are against hard deadlines so what this does is gives them one stop shopping so instead of buying material from us and shipping it to other people to have it processed, we’re doing it in house.
It also helps with costs. There’s less steps, less operators and less processing time.
Because we can now process a lot of material in a shorter period of time, we have managed to pick up a whole new customer base. Another piece of equipment is anytime you can do something that’s programmed and automated, you’ll get consistent parts time and time again and we can serve some larger customers that we couldn’t do before. As we expand into value add and processing, this machine has been a very good addition to our lineup of equipment.
