General Info About A656

A656 steel is a high-strength, low alloy steel plate. Kloeckner offers A5656 in four different grades, including 50, 60, 70, and 80, and in three chemical requirements, type 3, type 7, and type 8. This specific steel has good formability, weldability, and notch toughness when in the as-rolled condition. A656 does well in low and ambient temperatures and, due to its strengths, it is typically used in the construction industry. Some common applications include truck frames, construction equipment, crane booms, and general fabrication.

    A656 steel had good formability and good corrosion resistance. The cost, on the other hand, can be a little higher.

    Some common applications for the A656 steel are crane booms, rail car components, and truck frames. Other applications include construction and agricultural equipment, heavy vehicle frames, and transport trailers.

  • Machining

    A656 can be machined in the annealed condition, but will have better results when the condition is H1150M.

  • Welding

    A656 can be welded by common fusion and resistance methods, but should not be joined by oxyacetulene welding.
