Frequently Asked Questions About A283

  • What is the difference between grades A, B, C , and D?

There are four grades of this steel: A, B, C, D. Grades C and D are for structural and general use. For more information about the specifications for these two grades, please see the ATSM standards.

  • How does A283 compare to A36?

A36 steel has slightly higher ductility and lower strength than A283. When comparing the two, grade C is the most similar in chemical composition.

  • Which grade has the highest tensile strength?

Grade D shows the highest tensile strength at 415 – 515 MPa.

  • What's the difference between A283 and SA283?

A283 is only used for general structural purposes, while SA283 meets requirements for use in boiler and vessel plates, in addition to structural applications.
